Mystery Paper Sculptures
I highly recommend checking out the full story and all of the pictures of sculptures that create this mystery, one of my all-time favorites. Fabulously-creative paper sculptures have been left behind by an anonymous artist in libraries throughout the United Kingdom! Read and see more. LINK
Book Sculptures :: Boukje Voet
Though I've seen plenty of books deconstructed, Boukje Voet takes it to a new level, creating fabulous messes of twists and turns, long strings of swirls, or piles of convolutions. See more at her exto site. LINK
Book Creativity :: Bronia Sawyer
Bronia Sawyer has recently done a few series of works working with books. I can't help but wonder if she was inspired by Cara Barer. Check out more of Bronia's work on her site. LINK
Mantras and Meditations :: Meg Hitchcock
Meg Hitchcock repurposes individual letters cut from books to create new messages. See more of her mantras and meditations at her site. Many are quite beautiful. LINK
Volumes :: Jacqueline Rush Lee
Jacqueline Rush Lee has been doing some interesting things with books, putting them together in blocks and in circles, and all sorts of other shapes. See more at her site. LINK
Hive :: Kristiina Lahde
I enjoyed this series of altered telephone books by Kristiina Lahde called Hive. See them up close and stacked over at her site. LINK
Carved Books :: Guy Laramee
I think one of the reasons I like Guy Laramee's carved books is that he creates miniature scenes, often adding color and texture to many of his carved books. Check out more over on his site. LINK
Carved Books :: Long-Bin Chen
Though I always hate to see a book "destroyed", I can't help but appreciate what the substrate brings to these sculptures, the ink on the pages adding the strata one might find in stone. There's plenty of variety in Long-Bin Chen's work so make sure to click to see more. LINK
Art Book Covers :: Tim Baker
Artist Tim Baker created a series of four beautiful art book covers. See these and the other two over on his Deviant Art page. Very cool. LINK
Judge the Book by its Cover
Not necessarily art in itself, but this is included here to make us reconsider art in the world of consumerism. This one goes out to all of the graphic designers out there, an interactive that allows you to "judge the book by its cover" and choose which one you think is the best seller. LINK
Kraak & Smaak :: Weartwill
I love stop-action animation. I love flip books. I love creativity. This little music video has all of that, allowing flip book actions to interact with the characters. LINK
The Book Collection :: Paul Octavius
Photographer and designer Paul Octavious created this cool little series, numbers created with stacks of books. Some are quite the balancing act. See them all at his site. LINK
Strahov Libray 40 Gigapixels
Once you learn about this project, you realize how amazing it is. Basically, it is a 360-degree photo of a room in the Strahov Libray. But the level of detail is so immense that it allows you to zoom in to read every book tile on the shelves (and see the art, architecture, and murals of the room itself, close up). LINK
Mini Planners
This advertisement for moleskin was obviously inspired by some of the great stop-action animations created with books. Though I think I prefer the creative versions over the commercial, this is still pretty cool and appropriate for their product. LINK
Hoedown from Rodeo :: Eleanor Stewart
This stop-action animation was created by Eleanor Stewart for a final project while she was in school. Though I've seen similar productions, I've got to give some credit to anyone who will put in this sort of effort, especially done solo. LINK
Folded Books :: Issac Salazar
I know these have already been featured everywhere and I almost skipped including them because I'm tired of seeing them myself. But I suppose the folded books of Issac Salazar do deserve a mention. Such a simple idea, and well executed. This takes dog-earred books to a whole new level. See more on his flickr page. LINK
Book Xylophone
Though the concept is quite simple, to use the sounds of thumping on books to create music, I love that the artist also paid attention to the graphic quality of the book covers to create a unified visual as well. See and hear for yourself. LINK
Pinhole Book Cameras :: Erin Paysse
Erin Paysse creates pinhole cameras from old books! And you can purchase one if you feel so inspired. The selection does vary over at her "engrained" website depending on what has been created or sold so if you like them and want to see more, check back again later. LINK
