Before I Die :: Candy Chang

When it comes to a public art project, this is one way to get people intimately involved. An abandoned house in New Orleans, some chalk-board paint, and blank lines to finish the sentence got things going. Read more and see more pictures that show what people wrote at the artist's site. LINK

Scratching the Surface :: Vhils

Alexandre Farto, aka Vhils, creates some amazing street art, not by just painting on the surface, but by breaking into it! Check out his site, especially the Walls, in his selected works. LINK

Or watch a beautiful video of him at work. LINK

Up There

This documentary-style film tells the story of sign painters, the traditional ones that use paint brushes to do their work. Because it is depicting ads for Stella Artois, you'll need to type in your date of birth to access the site, but it's tame. Watch, meet some of the interesting characters and see how they work up there. LINK

Out of Place :: Donna Wearmouth and Simon Walvin

A unique view of the symbols in our lives, and nice photography too. See the series at Donna's blog. LINK

Graffiti Analysis :: Evan Roth

Graffiti Analysis is an ongoing study of the motion of graffiti. Custom software records the movements and creates a digital representation - allowing for additional effects and even an element of 3D to be added! Check out the site. LINK

Or watch on Vimeo. LINK

Graffiti-Influenced Sculptures :: Etnik

Street artist Etnik has branched out to create hanging sculptures that relate stylistically to his graffiti. LINK

A Day in the Backyard :: Evol

Think this is a photograph? Check out the process video of the street artist known as Evol at work and see how it was really done. LINK

While you're there you can check out some of the other works in his Flicker photostream.

Some of his older work can be found at his site. LINK

Skelewags :: Richard Vermaak

I LOVE these little monster drawings! He does a great job of using the cracks, paint chips or other idiosyncrasies found around him.

This is a must check out! His own site says that it's under construction but you can check out a whole slew of his pieces here. Just scroll down. LINK

Inflating Art :: Joshua Allen Harris

You may have seen the air bear before, but some of Joshua Allen Harris' later creations are even more fantastic. Creating creatures that are animated by the machinations of the city. What a concept.

See the original air bear video here. LINK And hear him being interviewed about his work and see a wider selection here. LINK

99 Rooms

This is a combination of a bunch of different genres. Abandoned photography. Street art and illustration. Multimedia and gaming.

Both the photography and illustrations are quite beautiful. But the most interesting, and sometimes frustrating, aspect is that it almost functions like a point-and-click game, having to find the spot or combination of spots to click to get to the next room. With some clicks, things happen, others just move you forward.

It is possible to navigate directly to each room without finding the right spots to click. On a Mac you hold down the command key. Not sure what key on a PC, perhaps Control? LINK

Muto :: Blu

A very cool graffiti animation by Blu. LINK

Also interesting to check out his drawings. Strange thoughts. LINK

Graffiti Archaeology

A very cool site that shows photographs of popular graffiti sites layered over each other over time. Use the timeline at the bottom of the window to navigate each site. It's amazing to see repeated attempts to remove the graffiti fail so quickly. LINK

Clean Graffiti :: Symbollix

This group actually sells it's services, creating clean graffiti, cleaning the dirt off rather than adding paint to. Check out the personal gallery at their site as well as some of their commercial projects. LINK

MetaBiotica :: Alexander Orion

This guy combines stencil graffiti with people on the street in some really original photography. Check out all of them at his site. Click on MetaBiotica. LINK

Ossario :: Alexander Orion

Another project from Alexander Orion, clean graffiti. For this project, he cleaned the walls of a tunnel. More pictures at his site. Click on Ossario. LINK

Tape Art :: BUFFdiss

BUFFdiss uses many types of tape, working indoors and out, and uses tape as a medium in itself or as a stencil tool. It appears that BUFFdiss worked with others to create some of these, adding to the variety in style. Lots of cool pictures at the Flicker page. LINK

B-SIDE

A new take on graffiti, decorating the backs of street signs. Unfortunately, aside from this one, the photographs don't zoom in very close.

Street Art :: Banksy

Banksy is the most widely known graffiti artist in the world and has inspired many others with his stencil technique. Many of his pieces make political statements while others are just downright funny. In addition to checking out his own site, I'd recommend seeking out some of the news articles about his work. Some pretty wild stuff.

Although the picture shown is not as recognizable as some of his other work, it is one of my favorites.

And though his own site doesn't show all of his work, other examples can be found elsewhere online. A must click! LINK

Sidewalk Drawings :: Julian Beever

Many more examples of Julian Beever's artistic and advertising sidewalk drawings on his site including shots of the views from the "wrong side".

I like the cleverness of those that he works himself into. LINK
