Superhistory :: Agan Harahap

Indonesian artist Agan Harahap put together some interesting photomanipulations of Superheroes in WWII settings. Superman along with soldiers looting museums, V with surrendering troops, or Spiderman in an urban battle scene. Though they still seem out of place, Agan did and excellent job of creating images that are not noticeably Photoshopped. See them all for yourself at his Deviant Art page. Unfortunately, he did not set up a separate folder for them so you'll have to browse through some of his other work as well. LINK

Scaled Pixar Characters :: Juan Pablo Bravo

I enjoyed the graphic quality of this 2010 infographic by Juan Pablo Bravo (only a portion of which is shown here). Not only does it remind me of all of the great Pixar movies that have been made, but it also shows the size relationships of the characters. Of course, Cars takes up more space and A Bug's Life less, while the Incredibles fall somewhere in the middle. See the full infographic for yourself. LINK

Movie Bar Code

This is one of the more interesting visual concepts I've seen lately. Take a visual medium, primarily movies, and condense its visual frames to create a color field. Some are exactly what you would expect, The Matrix tones of green or Donnie Darko being dark. Others are completely unexpected. (Shown here is Pan's Labyrinth.) See what your favorite movie's color is. LINK

Dots and Swirls :: Carter Hodgkin

Though I think I like some of her older work not currently on her website, Carter Hodgkin has added some animations to her portfolio. See more at her site. LINK

Map Birds and Animals :: Jason LaFerrera

Though I would be more impressed if he were creating these pieces manually rather than on a computer, Jason LaFerrera does a good job of using the textures of old maps to emulate the fur or feathers in his recreations. See more of the work at his site. LINK

Victorian Star Trek :: Rabbit Foot

It is interesting that these characters have become so embedded in our culture, that even when you take them out of context, we still know exactly who they are. See all of the victorianized Star Trek images. LINK

Scary Girl :: Nathan Jurevicius

Artist Nathan Jurecicius works as a professional illustrator but has also created the world of Scary Girl. It began with collectible toys before being developed into one of the best Flash games ever created, followed by a graphic novel. Full of odd creatures and landscapes, the illustrations make this great for adults too.

Even if you choose not to play, the intro sequence to the game is worth checking out! The first two levels are pretty easy with higher levels becoming more challenging. Playing in full-screen mode helps a ton. The game itself was developed by TouchMyPixel.

Go to the Scary Girl site to see it all! LINK

Underground Mansion

Though currently in concept phase, this underground mansion is still pretty amazing. I particularly like the contrast between it and the next-door neighbor. Check out the video on vimeo. LINK

It looks as if the builder is Perdu but the company that put together the 3d presentation is Diffuse 3d.

A Thousand and One Dreams

Combining the black and white photography of Marco Guerra and the ink drawings of Yasmina Alaoui these works are exquisite in their intricacy and composition. See them all at their site. NSFW. LINK

Body Tatoos :: Kim Joon

These works by Kim Joon aren't actual tatoos, nor are they body painting. They are computer generated, right down to the texture of the skin. But being from a culture where tattoos are taboo, he sees tattos as a metaphor and inspiration. See all of his work at his site. NSFW. LINK

CG Sphere Project

This project has been ongoing for years now, and I'm sure there have been a ton of great uploads since I checked it out in depth back in 2007. Simply put, 3D rendering artists download a template of a sphere against a grid background then let their imaginations go wild and upload the results. See more at the site. LINK

Obesq

This is a really cool drawing program that makes me nostalgic for spyrograph. It even lets you export a line-art version of your creation! LINK

NOTE: At last check, the Obesq site had disappeared.

Insanely Twisted :: Michel Gangé

The creator of these little monsters is a guy named Michael Gangé though he worked with others to animate them. In addition to the monsters and games, he's also done a couple comics/graphic novels.

You can check out a bunch of short animated monster clips at the Insanely Twisted site. LINK

Or see the preview for a game based on his creations (still in production at the time of this posting). LINK

Self Portrait :: Erik Nordenankar

As a graduation project from Beckmans College of Design, Erik Nodenankar came up with the concept to create the biggest drawing in the world. A package with a GPS tracker would be shipped around the world, creating his self portrait. I suspect that the whole hoax thing was most likely created by others who saw the project and didn't realize that it was just a school project, never meant to go beyond getting a grade. But the original link is gone and these are the only links I can find now. LINK
